Elijah McCoy

On the day May 2, 1844 a man who will change the world was born in Ontario, Canada. His name was Elijah McCoy and his situation was better than most black members at the time. He was born free due to his parents, who were fugitive slaves, escaping to Ontario, Canada. He became well educated because of this opportunity bestowed upon by his parents. As a result he became a certified mechanical engineer in Scotland while on apprenticeship there at age 15.

After receiving his certification, Elijah decided to move to Michigan to find employment as a mechanical engineer. The Michigan Central Railroad seemed like the perfect location for his skills. However, if it was due to his skin or his experience, all Elijah was offered was either the position firefighter or oiler. That did not stop his ambitions.

Elijah did afford a mechanical workshop so he can create/invent ideas that he had in mind. His most popular invention was the “automatic lubrication system” and this was something revolutionary. It allowed for the oiling of steam engines locomotives while they are in movement. This was amazing because all previous oiling methods required stopping the train and having oilers (which was the original job he was offered) go around and oil the mechanic parts of the train.

Elijah’s invention was so well known that a saying “The real McCoy” was coined. Whenever someone wanted a train with an automatic lubrication system they would ask “does it have the real McCoy?”. It further developed to the saying, which is “The real McCoy” meaning “is it the real thing?”. His invention was so reliable, so revolutionary, so impeccable that it revolutionized the mechanical machinery industry and changed the language of the United States. Well fitted for a black inventor who will stay in history as one of the most influential inventors.
